About the Glutes

Your glutes are your butt muscles. They straighten your hip joint when you stand up from sitting, and they help you walk up stairs. They work opposite to your hip flexors at the front of your hip. Strong glutes help prevent back pain.

  • Gluteus Maximus: The largest muscle that gives your butt its shape. It's the only muscle that can straighten your hip when you're standing up.
  • Gluteus Medius: On the side of your hip, helps you balance on one leg. It's the first muscle that activates when you walk to keep your hips level.
  • Gluteus Minimus: Deepest muscle that helps rotate your hip. It works with gluteus medius to stabilize your hip when you stand on one leg.
